Janne har precis tillbringat ett år i fängelse och drömmer om en karriär som pianist. Han förälskar sig i den unga låtskrivaren Britt, men hennes far gör allt för att förstöra deras förhållande.

1930 and times are bad. When Ulla and Gunnar also get notice the future doesn't look bright. Besides that Ulla discover that she's pregnant. Gunnar gets a job thought so now they can get married. But the outbreak of the war 1939 puts both of their patience severely to the test. Gunnar gets called up for military service and the future is uncertain.
